Plant Care

We plant all our maples in ericaceous compost.  To ensure good drainage we go up a pot size at a time. Acers are happy either in the ground (good drainage and acidic soil applies), or when kept in pots. Morning sun is fine, afternoon summer sun scorches the leaves.

On variegated light green varieties or Linearilobum, browning of the leaves can be caused from overwatering or leaf scorch.

To check a unhappy plant we take it out of the pot to see if roots have rotted and check for little white grubs (weevil beetles), ants, or look at stems for black marks under the leaves or new growth stems for aphids.

All our plants are kept outside all through the winter with shading going over tunnels late spring for protection from the sun then taken down in November.

we use a slow-release fertiliser. We use organic treatments for bugs.
